My Experience…
By: Orlando Soto
Hi!
My name is Orlando and I am a San Angelo Clubhouse member. I have been a member since January of this year. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I suffer from depression, anxiety, and I also have bad heart problems and epilepsy.
I started coming to the Clubhouse because my counselor at West Texas Counseling and Guidance referred me here. I must say, it has been the most wonderful experience in my life. I have gotten to travel and meet new people. I was a very shy person before the Clubhouse.
I have to say, I have been through some hard times, but August was especially hard for me. I had some family problems- I had to leave the Clubhouse for two weeks to take care of family in Fort Worth. When I was away, I felt lonely, down and depressed. I didn’t think I would make it through this time. I was feeling suicidal. But, God and the help of some very close friends helped me through it all. I had calls from Clubhouse staff and members. I would like to thank Ami, the director, Andrew, Kristy and very good friends of mine, Ruben, and Michael, who are also members. Without them calling and texting me, I think I would have lost it.
But, I would also like to thank a young girl who I met at a restaurant in Fort Worth. My family all got together to celebrate my birthday. The staff at the restaurant came up to sing Happy Birthday. As we were getting ready to leave, this young girl with a mental illness came up to my table with her father and mother. She asked me in a very sweet way if she could also sing Happy Birthday. With a lot of hugs and kisses, this young girl and her family, along with my family sang Happy Birthday to me.
All this time, while I was gone from the Clubhouse, I did not think I would go back. But, this little girl, who was maybe ten years old, asked me if she could tell me a secret; I said, “Of course.” Then, she whispered in my ear. “Go back to what you were doing. The people there want you back.” How did this little girl know that I was not from Fort Worth? I have no idea. But, it gave me hope to go back to the Clubhouse.
I also want to thank my wonderful sisters who were also there for me with words of encouragement. But, most of all, thanks to the San Angelo Clubhouse, who welcomed me back with open arms. You are all my brothers and sisters and I love you all.
