Director’s Corner

By: Ami Mizell - Flint

This summer has been one of learning and growth at the San Angelo Clubhouse. In June, Ruben and I went to New York to train at the Fountain House, the first Clubhouse, established in 1948. In July, Andrew, Sam and Orlando went to a training at the San Antonio Clubhouse, founded in 2004. Many wonderful ideas were brought back from both. We had house meetings to share and vote on them all, and are excited see the results of these changes. The best part of us attending these trainings is that we are now all “on the same page,” and, after seeing larger, more established Clubhouses in action, we all share a similar vision of the future of the San Angelo Clubhouse.

Our Clubhouse was already great, but the things we have learned collectively this summer will make it even better! I attended a training with another group recently, where we were told, “If your organization is doing things the same way you were two years ago, you’re failing.” From this, I learned that we cannot be stagnant; to grow, we have to change!

Isn’t that what we need to do in our daily lives, too? Imagine if you were the same person you were two years ago! We have to work to grow and become a little better every day.

Members and staff at the Clubhouse work together to learn and grow, as members work toward their recovery.

It is an honor for me to learn and grow with all of you.
